This New Device will Connect Satellite to Any Smartphone! Learn More

Satellite connectivity is going to be a big trend in the tech industry this year thanks to companies like Samsung and Apple. Several companies have already started working with their satellite based phones. At the Mobile World Congress, powerful chip makers like Qualcomm and MediaTek announced their respective technologies. Apart from this, many phone brands have announced to bring support for this feature in their upcoming devices.

But what if you want to use satellite communication without buying a new phone? Bullet Group, a company that manufactures rugged phones, has tried to answer this question.

Using a $99 gadget called the Motorola DeFi Satellite Link, any Android or iOS device can be connected to a geostationary satellite via Bluetooth. Through this, short messages can be sent and received, location can be shared and emergency services can be accessed. All you need is a clear sky.

The target audience for this new gadget is those who want added security while hiking, fishing, skiing, or touring. It will also be useful for anyone in remote areas. It can be used for emergency communications during events such as hurricanes, blackouts or earthquakes.

This gadget has a 600 mAh battery which according to the manufacturer will provide backup for a day. Waterproof and shock-resistant, this device can be used outdoors with ease. The location can be shared using the two physical buttons in it and emergency support can be contacted if the DeFi satellite link is not connected to the smartphone.

However, there is no facility to easily connect to the satellite link and send messages using iMessage or WhatsApp. To use this facility, Bullitt's own messaging app Bullitt Satellite Messenger must be used. If connected to WiFi or mobile network, this app will work like a normal messaging app The message sent from the satellite mode app will go as SMS and the receiver will get the link to install the app. Although this is a somewhat messy means of communication, it can certainly come in handy in an emergency.

The gadget alone costs $99. If you want to use the satellite connection, you have to multiply the subscription of 5 dollars per month. This emergency service called Crisis Response will be managed by Focuspoint International.

This DiFi Satellite Link provides satellite connectivity using the same MediaTek chip found in a rugged smartphone called the Motorola DiFi 2. At the same time, this kind of two-way communication with mobiles is possible thanks to this chip. Earlier, Apple brought satellite connectivity in their iPhone 14 Pro and Watch Ultra for communication in emergency situations.
