Ways to Stay Safe in Mobile Banking

Mobile banking services are gaining popularity in Bangladesh. People are opening mobile banking accounts using their mobile numbers because of the convenience of easy and fast money transfer and shopping.

New customers are registering every day for mobile banking services such as BRAC Bank's development, Dutch Bangla Bank's Rocket, Postal Department's cash service etc. There are many risks with mobile banking as money can be transferred only by dialing a shortcode with the help of a mobile phone and using the PIN number. Besides, it is also possible to make transactions through the mobile app. Here are some tips to keep in mind to stay safe with mobile banking services.

1. Keep PIN Number Secret

If you have multiple mobile banking accounts (eg Bikash, Cash), set a separate PIN number for each mobile banking account. Avoid sharing this pin number with anyone. Remember, if someone knows the PIN number, he can withdraw money from your mobile.

2. Beware of Bogus “customer care”.

Only you should know your mobile banking account PIN - no one else. Bank customer care will never ask for your PIN number. If someone wants to know your mobile banking account (eg Bikash) pin number or verification code using false identity of customer care, then complain by calling the concerned banking service helpline instead of giving the pin number.

3. Open Mobile Banking Account on Properly Registered SIM

If your SIM registration is not correct it can be stopped at any time or it can be taken away by someone else. Also SIM can be lost. In these cases, if you have valid SIM documents, you can easily remove the SIM and use mobile banking services. But if you don't have the documents, you can't withdraw the SIM - in that case, the money in the mobile banking account is more likely to get back.

4. Lottery, Prize, Beware of the King of Jinn!

Many people may have heard, calling from an unknown number and suddenly saying "You have won the lottery of 10 lakh rupees, you will get money only if you develop this much money on such and such number", or many people call and ask you to develop by saying "King of Jinn". Then many people get greedy and send money to mobile. It is not good to be too greedy. So beware of these traps. Report the entire incident to law enforcement along with the scammer's phone number. Complain to mobile banking service helpline.

5. Beware of Fake Messages and Fake Calls!

Nowadays, using various online based services, you can create any desired phone number and send messages and even make calls from them. They are very dangerous. You must have noticed, for example, that messages coming from BKash have "bKash" instead of the message sender's name - meaning the message is from bKash (Bikash). Now if someone sends you a message using bKash through online messaging service and it says that 5000 rupees have arrived in your mobile then you will surely be surprised.

Many people will call you on your mobile phone by sending such fraudulent messages and say that "Brother, you have forgotten that so many thousands of rupees have been spent on your development, please return it to me soon." Then you may be tempted to dial Bikash and pay immediately after seeing the message. Stop! Never make such a fatal mistake! Every time you receive a money message in your mobile banking account, you can check the balance by dialing the mobile banking number or logging in to the app. Do not trust any calls or messages at all.

For example, after actually reading the message from Bikash, you must dial *247# or check your balance from the app to see if the money has been added to your account. In the case of other mobile banking accounts, you can know the balance by dialing the account number of the respective service or in the app. Again, don't rely on calls or messages at all. Only then can there be danger.

6. Make Sure to Call before sending Money to any number

Before sending money to any mobile banking number, make sure that the money you send goes to the right person by manually dialing the number on the phone (or from the contact list). There are cases of fraudsters calling and asking for money by duplicating the phone number through number cloning. So if you get a call from an acquaintance's number, before giving money, you must dial that person's number from your mobile to find out if he is really asking for money. Listen carefully to the tone of the voice, need, etc.

7. Trade in Your Own Account

Use mobile banking account opened on personal phone number to transfer money among themselves without cash out. This makes accounting easier and increases security.

8. Leave Space for the Message

Leave enough free space in the message inbox for new messages to arrive on mobile. Many times the feature phone's message box fills up, leaving no room for new messages. In this case, important transaction messages of mobile banking will not come. So make room in the inbox for new messages. You can save the mobile banking messages by deleting various offers and other unnecessary messages from the mobile company, which may be useful in the future. However, care must be taken so that no one else can see these messages. Because many people can cheat in different ways even after seeing the transaction details.

9. Keep Track of the Balance

Always remember how much money is deposited in your mobile banking account. Can be used in emergency situations. For example, if you call customer care with a problem, they may ask for balance and last few transactions (to make sure you are a genuine customer). But never ask customer care for your pin number. The information of mobile banking messages is also very sensitive. So lock them or write them down in a secret place and delete them from your phone.

10. If the Phone is lost...

Ensure the security of your mobile banking account by calling the mobile banking helpline as soon as possible in case of lost mobile phone. For added security, if possible, turn on SIM card PIN code security so that the SIM PIN is required when the phone is turned on. Remember, turning on the SIM card PIN is a little dangerous, because if you forget the SIM PIN number (without the Pak code) you can no longer use your SIM card - you have to get a new SIM for the same mobile number. By doing this, you will get the mobile number back, but it will be a little trouble. So think twice before activating SIM PIN code.

There is no last word when it comes to security. So beyond these points there are many points which may be written on another day. Share your thoughts on mobile banking security in the comments. thank you
